The best water heater is the one that fits the home's fuel, room, demand, and budget. A lower installed price can be sensible when the existing setup is usable. A longer service life can be useful when the household expects to stay, but it does not remove the need for correct sizing and maintenance.

It uses about one third the electricity of a conventional electric tank, but it can cool the room, sound like a refrigerator, and recover more slowly.
Choose the tank when a direct replacement is the priority. Choose tankless when endless hot water and recovered floor space justify the gas and venting project. Consider heat pump when an electric space meets the room requirements and the rebate rules fit.
