Immediate safety sequence
Control water and energy only when it is safe, then document the leak so help can arrive prepared.
Keep children and pets away from the area. Do not step into standing water near electrical equipment. If the water is hot, give it room to cool and do not handle a damaged fitting with bare hands.
- Close the cold valve
Turn the supply valve above the heater clockwise if it is safe to reach. This limits incoming water while the source is assessed.
- Turn off energy
Turn off the gas supply or electrical breaker. Do not touch wet electrical equipment. If you smell gas, leave the area and call for help from a safe location.
- Locate the source
Look without dismantling anything. Check fittings, the T&P valve, drain valve, pan, seam, and bottom of the tank.

Where the water is coming from
The source of the leak determines whether the problem is a fitting, a valve, condensation, or the tank itself.
Water can travel along the jacket or floor, so the wettest visible spot is not always the source. Use a dry towel to trace the first place that becomes wet, but do not restart the heater or open a valve to test it.

Containment while you wait
A few careful steps can limit damage without disturbing gas, electrical, or pressure-safety components.
Move belongings away from the water, use towels or a container where safe, and protect flooring from continued flow. Do not cap a relief discharge, remove a safety valve, or cut into the tank. If the leak is in an attic, closet, or upper floor, check the room below for moisture and keep people clear of wet electrical areas.
A photo of the label and source helps us bring the right parts or discuss replacement capacity. Include the full rating plate, the wet connection, the floor or pan, and any visible control or error message.
Containment is not a repair. Keep the cold supply closed until the source is understood, and do not turn energy back on simply to see whether the leak stopped. If water continues after the cold valve is closed, there may be stored water draining from the tank or another plumbing source nearby.
